Padmanabha Reddy | A Writer | Motilal Nehru College | Batch of 2022

Q. Tell us something about yourself.

Ans. My name is Padmanabha Reddy. I belong to Telangana. I graduated with a B.A. (Hons) in English, from Motilal Nehru College, University of Delhi. I am a published author of three books out of which one was ranked as the best seller on amazon. Since my school time, Creative writing has been my hobby and I also used to play table tennis. I love literature a lot and I am planning to do a Master's in English only. I also love teaching students. There are underprivileged kids in my neighbourhood whom I used to teach in my free time that I like.

Q. Why did you choose to be a writer?

Ans. Since my childhood, I developed an intense love for English because my grandfather used to narrate stories to me. He used to narrate Ramayana and Mahabharata. My father wanted me to become an Engineer but I was passionate about English and Telugu literature. I wrote my first novel when I was in 11th standard and got that published. After that, I started diving deep into the books, and stories of many authors like Shakespeare, Margo, etc. Later on, I got into the University of Delhi to study Literature.

Q. What kind of books do you like to read, Any self-help books or just literature?

Ans. I kind of do not like to read Self-help books. I have immense love for fiction and literature. Fiction has something in it that self-help books do not have because if you tell a kid some moral of the stories like don’t lie, Be honest or something then he/she might not listen or remember but if you make them read the fiction such as Panchtantra then the kid must develop some sort of moral values because stories, dramas, etc impact the human psychology a lot.

Q. In your college days, you were part of which societies?

Ans. I was not that good at dancing or singing or any such cultural society that fits me. Although, I came to Delhi to study literature so I wrote poetry and became part of the hindi debating society of the college which has debating and creative writing in it too which interests me a lot. There were both English and Hindi debating societies but I left the English one later on because my forte was Hindi.

Q. What was the challenge that you faced after moving to Delhi?

Ans. Delhi is a whole different place. Everything was so different, initially, it was a bit difficult for me to fit in but later on, I became used to everything. I haven’t seen people speaking Hindi a lot since I grew up in Telangana. Speaking Hindi was maybe once or twice a day but in Delhi people speak so much Hindi so this became a challenge for me. The food was also one of the challenges for me in Delhi because in the South we use different types of spices that are very different from here.

Q. What advice do you want to give to the students who are currently getting admitted to the University of Delhi?

Ans. I would like to advise the children to not get disheartened if they do not get admitted to an elite college. College does not matter that much, what matters is how you utilise your college years to enhance your skills. Study hard, be a part of College societies, take part in competitions, and grow yourself as much as you can.

Q. Is there anything you want to change from your College life?

Ans. There is no such thing that I want to change in my college life, Motilal gave me a good experience. I became the President of my English department. I won many competitions being a part of the debating society. It was a really good experience and I will never forget my College life. It’s just if there was no lockdown I could have enjoyed and experienced many more things from my college life.
